Oil Painting by my Grandmother
Oil Painting by my Grandmother

When I was growing up art was going on all around me.  My Mother, my Grandmother and my Aunts always creating something. I did ceramics with my mother, painted with my Grandmother and was taught about sewing by my Aunt (well she tried).

Creating works of art was a big part of my life and then one day (I guess) I just stopped.  Can’t pinpoint exactly when or why. I think maybe I simply became too busy.  Was it a loss of confidence; becoming more self-conscious as an adult?  For whatever reason, I began to assume I wasn’t talented. Which then I presume led to a loss of interest.  I often joked about how “artistic” had skipped a generation in the family.

Don’t get me wrong, I made sure that art was a HUGE part of both my daughters’ childhood. They are amazing artists in their own right; so incredibly creative.  I set up their work areas, made sure they had supplies, provided ideas and encouragement. For some reason though, I always sat on the sidelines.  Mostly watching, sometimes teaching but not really doing.

Then a couple of years ago something happened. Again, not 100% sure why but suddenly I was using oil pastels, then painting. I was painting on everything I could find. Had fun with an old pile of vinyl albums that were headed to the trash. Every kid (well teens now) that came over was handed some paint and a brush. My table cloth was rolls of white paper. Instead of salt n’ pepper shakers there were cups of crayons.
